Soul Stories
Devotionals from the Hearts of our Congregation

Dear Friends,

In the summer of 2013, we began a tradition at First Presbyterian Church, Pasadena, Texas. Members and friends were invited to write a story that somehow pointed to the power and presence of God in their lives. The stories were to be collected into a devotional book for the liturgical season between Pentecost and Advent, known as “Ordinary Time” in the Church. Some experiences were “mountaintop experiences” while others were more subtle encounters, woven in and through everyday life. We called these stories “Soul Stories” ..Glimpses of God in Ordinary Time.”

This year, in celebration of the 75th anniversary of First Presbyterian Church, we changed the custom a bit, choosing to publish the book in conjunction with the weekend of celebration in October. We remembered stories that in some way reflected God’s presence through the years of ministry at FPC, creating a spiritual memoir of sorts. Do you know what the NUMBER ONE REASON people gave for not writing a Soul Story? They would say “I’m not a writer.” But the truth is that you don’t have to be a writer to share a memory from your life. You have a story to tell that may begin simply with the words “I remember when...”.

”Part 1” is the first collection of stories celebrating 75 years of ministry at FPC. Some of the stories will bring a smile to your face while others may bring a tear to your eyes. Regardless of the feelings they stir up, they all point to the presence of God as experienced through the seasons, saints and sinners of this amazing congregation. You may notice that some stories don’t mention God at all, and that’s okay. Wherever there is love, caring and/or healthy laughter, God is present, named or not.
